How do I handle my Texas Traffic Ticket?

Checking your rearview mirror as you pull away from the law enforcement officer who gave you a traffic ticket, you think,"Great - my clean driving record is gone!" We have good news for you - we can help!

After you receive a traffic ticket, you have 10 days to tell the court how you're going to handle it.

Steps to a Clean Driving Record

On or before the appearance date on the traffic ticket citation, you must submit the following to the court:

  • Completed copy of the Affidavit form with signature notarized.
  • Proof of valid non-commercial Texas driver's license.
  • Court administrative fee.
  • Copy of your insurance policy.

To qualify for traffic ticket dismissal, you'll need to hold a valid Texas driver's license, or be a member, or the spouse or dependent child of a member, of the United States military forces serving on active duty, and provide proof of automobile liability insurance or other proof of financial responsibility.

You qualify for a defensive driving course, and ultimately traffic ticket dismissal, if you did not receive your moving violation:

  • in a construction zone
  • for speeding 25 MPH or more over the posted speed limit
  • for passing a stopped school bus
  • for reckless driving
  • for an offense related to your insurance, your driver's license, or your license plate

Note: You may not complete this course for traffic ticket dismissal more than once every 12 months.
