Driver Safety Tips
We all know the importance of avoiding aggressive drivers and of defensive driving. We also know that we should buckle our seat belts, keep both hands on the wheel, and not talk on cell phones, eat or drink while driving. These are basic driver safety tips, but there are other factors that affect our driving ability.
Following these driver safety tips can help make everyone on the road safer:
- Get a good night's sleep. While this varies from individual to individual, sleep experts recommend between 7-9 hours of sleep per night for adults and 8 1/2-9 1/2 for teens.
- If you have to use a cell phone, pull off the road and keep the conversation short. Otherwise, let voicemail answer the call.
- Pay attention to the road ahead and be aware of the drivers around you. If you see an aggressive driver approaching in your rearview mirror, get out of his way. Move into another lane or give him plenty of space to get around you.
- Don't let yourself be distracted from scanning - while you're staring at one thing, another hazard could develop outside of your range of vision. Watch the road ahead while taking quick glances further ahead and in your mirrors.
