Texas Driver Safety

Although approximately 40,000 people are killed every year in motor vehicle crashes in the U.S., many Americans don’t consider training in driver safety a priority, except when their teens are learning to drive. But with over six million police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2007, driver safety should be of interest to every road user, not just new drivers.

The term “driver safety” encompasses not only drivers of passenger vehicles, but drivers of large trucks and buses; motorcycle, moped, and bicycle riders; passengers of all vehicles; and pedestrians. Everyone on the road is at risk, and everyone on the road can benefit from driver education. In addition to the usual suspects of excessive speed and running red traffic lights, motor vehicle crashes can be caused by or contributed to by a wide variety of factors, including:

  • The mental condition of drivers, including stress and mental illness
  • The physical condition of drivers, including fatigue and side effects from medications
  • Distracting influences, such as pets and noisy children
  • Vehicles in poor mechanical condition
  • Special events and holidays

There is a wide range of driver safety courses available, both online and in classrooms.  Those who take advantage of this training improve safety not only for themselves and their families, but for all road users.
